Well yesterday was my version of hell. We got stuck at the Minot airport (I use the term "airport" loosely, considering there is only room for one plane) for FOUR hours. A friend had dropped us off and like 5 minutes later they announced that our plane would be delayed. I had already put David's car seat through security so they would not let me have it back to hail a cab. Also, we were there during lunch time and guess what, nothing in the vending machines that David could eat! Ugg!
We finally took off and my connecting flight took off probably at the same exact time we were landing. They wouldn't hold the flight of us. But on the next flight to Denver we left late because they held the plane for people to make their connecting flight! No justice!
But Lisa was there to greet us, having already gotten the rental car, checked into the hotel and gotten groceries. We are staying at one of those extended stay hotels with a full kitchen. It is awesome.
Day 1 at National Jewish Health this year is the best case of deva ju ever. We are staying in the same hotel, driving the same kind of car, the hospital is the same and many of the staff members are still there. The same doctor as last year is in charge of his care, which just makes everything so easy. They all remember David as the kid that had the anaphylactic reaction to barley (which it turns out is an uncommon allergy, thanks Dad!). Lisa sent them pictures of themselves with David after last year's visit and a couple are still up in the pediatric wing.
But things are a lot easier this year. David is in much better health. The primary example of that being that we were released for the day at 3pm. Last year we spent our first night in the hospital while David was heavily sedated to help teach him how to sleep through the night.
Today was just about figuring out what David had been through during the last year and what our course of treatment would be. Tomorrow we start the testing. Definitely a blood draw in David's immediate future, so we are pumping him full of fluids tonight and tomorrow, hoping that he will be a much easier stick than last year.
